Definition of disease:

Botox injections are one of the most widely used methods today to smooth facial wrinkles and create a more youthful appearance in people. Wrinkles caused by frowning that form between the eyebrows or on the forehead and wrinkles around the eyes that appear when laughing will largely disappear after Botox injections. These types of wrinkles are caused by the contraction of the subcutaneous muscles. Botox injections reduce these wrinkles by reducing the ability of these muscles to contract.

After injection, Botox is absorbed into the muscle and settles in the neurotransmitters that send the command to the muscles to contract. At this location, Botox prevents the release of a chemical mediator called acetylcholine - which is responsible for muscle contraction. As a result, the command to contract does not reach the muscle and in fact a temporary muscle paralysis is created that lasts 3 to 6 months. The lack of contraction of the muscles under the skin causes the skin wrinkles over the muscle to fade and disappear.

Botox injections are usually performed in an office or clinic on an outpatient basis and do not require hospitalization. Since the injections are performed with very fine needles, they are not painful and do not require anesthesia. After disinfecting the facial skin, the doctor uses an insulin syringe to inject small amounts of Botox above the eyebrows, forehead, and around the eyes. Mild burning and redness may occur at the injection site, which resolves within a few hours. It is best to avoid lying down for a few hours after the injection and to avoid rubbing the injection site so that the Botox is completely absorbed into the muscles. Usually, wrinkles gradually fade from one to two days after the injection, and this effect lasts between 3 and 6 months. After this period, the effect of Botox gradually disappears and wrinkles appear twice. At this time, the injection can be repeated if desired.
