  • 👈 Definition of disease:

Glaucoma is a disease in which the optic nerve is damaged by factors such as increased intraocular pressure (or eye pressure for short). Since the optic nerve is responsible for transmitting visual information to the brain, its damage (gradually) causes visual field defects and, if the disease is not treated and progresses, it can eventually lead to complete blindness. This treatment is completely performed at Noor Ophthalmology Subspecialty Hospital in Tehran, Iran.

👈 Causes of the disease:

✅ Nutrition and diet
✅ Race and gender
✅ Genetic factors and family history of acute or chronic glaucoma
✅ Age over 60
✅ Diabetes
✅ Many medications also increase intraocular pressure and worsen the disease, such as cold and allergy pills, antihistamines, sedatives, corticosteroids, and some gastrointestinal medications.
✅ People with sleep apnea (sleep-disordered breathing) are very susceptible to glaucoma.

👈 Symptoms of the disease:

Most people have no symptoms. The first sign is often peripheral or side vision. It is often recognized late, which is why glaucoma is often called the thief of sight. Early detection of glaucoma is one of the reasons why you should have a complete eye exam every 1 to 2 years. Sometimes the pressure inside the eye can rise dramatically. In these cases, you may experience sudden eye pain, headache, blurred vision, or halos around lights. You need immediate medical attention if you have the following symptoms:
✅ Seeing halos around lights
✅ Vision loss
✅ Redness in the eye
✅ Nausea or vomiting
✅ Eye pain
✅ Limited vision (tunnel vision)

👈 Surgical method:

In surgeries used for glaucoma, the goal is to create openings for fluid to drain from the eye.
Ophthalmologists usually use medication and laser therapy first, followed by surgery to treat glaucoma.
In glaucoma surgery, local anesthesia is first used, or if necessary, general anesthesia, and a small piece of the cornea is removed to create a channel for fluid to drain.
In this surgery, the fluid inside the eye flows through a channel under the conjunctiva and then out of the eye.
In order to prevent infection for several weeks after the operation, drops and medication are used.
Usually, in 90 percent of cases, the result of glaucoma surgery is successful.

👈 Postoperative care:

✅ After discharge, a plastic shield and dressing will be placed on your eye. Avoid removing the dressing at home.
✅ Rest is recommended on the first day after surgery. Avoid lifting heavy objects (usually more than 2 kg) after glaucoma surgery. If you have to climb stairs, it is essential to exercise caution and be accompanied by the patient's relatives.
✅ During rest, the head should be higher than usual.
✅ Consuming light foods, warm liquids, and eating vegetables and fruits is suitable for accelerating recovery.
✅ It is normal to feel a foreign body after glaucoma surgery. Painkillers are prescribed to reduce the patient's discomfort.
✅ The patient should return for an examination the day after surgery.
✅ Glaucoma surgery is to preserve vision and prevent blindness and does not increase vision.
