  • 👈 Definition:

Keratoconus is an eye disease that usually begins at the beginning of puberty and continues until the third decade of life. As a result of this disease, the normal shape of the cornea, which is round and spherical, changes to a conical shape, and the patient experiences a decrease in vision. Since keratoconus is a progressive disease, it can occur in one or both eyes, but it is most often seen in both eyes.

01

👈 Causes of the disease:

Research has shown that weakening of the corneal tissue leads to keratoconus, and this may be due to an imbalance of enzymes in the cornea. There are risk factors for weakening of the cornea, including:
✅ Genetic predisposition, which is why keratoconus often affects more than one family member.
✅ Excessive exposure to the sun's ultraviolet rays.
✅ Excessive rubbing of the eyes.
✅ Damage from hard contact lenses.
✅ Chronic eye irritation.

👈 Symptoms of the disease:

The clinical signs of keratoconus vary depending on the severity of the disease. Because the progression of keratoconus is gradual, it may be difficult to diagnose the disease at first. However, in some cases, keratoconus can progress rapidly. As the cornea gradually becomes more irregular in shape, irregular myopia and astigmatism develop, and light scattering and light sensitivity may occur. Most patients with keratoconus change their glasses at each visit to the doctor.

👈 Surgical method:

This procedure, which has been introduced to the world in the past few years, is the only method that can stop the progression of keratoconus.
The procedure takes about an hour and is performed in a doctor's office or operating room. During the procedure, after removing the corneal epithelium, eye drops of the light-sensitive vitamin riboflavin (B2) are placed into the cornea and then activated by ultraviolet light (365 nm). This simple procedure has been shown to increase cross-linking in the collagen tissue of the cornea, which ultimately increases its strength.

✅ Avoid heavy activities that put pressure on your eyes. You can do light activities and exercise.
✅ Swimming is prohibited unless your doctor gives you permission.
✅ It is normal to have symptoms such as itching, burning, and blurred vision for a few days after the procedure, so don't worry.
✅ Clean your eyelids using saline solution and sterile gauze.
✅ Do not touch your eyes with dirty hands.
✅ Avoid being in dirty environments.
✅ Avoid coughing and sneezing hard, which can damage your eyes.
✅ The quality of vision after surgery depends on the condition of the retina, the health of the optic nerve, and the health of other parts of the eye.
✅ Leave a gap of 10 to 15 minutes between your drops
✅ If you experience sudden vision loss and severe abnormal changes, notify your surgeon immediately.
✅ Avoid rubbing your eyes
