Definition of disease:

The cornea is the transparent layer at the front of the eye, just in front of the iris, the “colored part of the eye.” In fact, the color of the eye depends on the iris, which varies from person to person, but the cornea is completely transparent like a window and allows light to enter the eye. The cornea also redirects light so that images of near and far objects are focused on the retina. A corneal transplant, or “keratoplasty,” is a procedure in which a cloudy cornea is replaced with a clear cornea.

A corneal transplant is a surgical procedure in which all or part of a patient's diseased cornea is replaced with a donor cornea in a single (layered) fashion. The transplanted cornea is taken from a previously healthy person who has no known disease or other indicators that would cause the recipient to reject the transplant and endanger their health. A corneal transplant is usually performed under general anesthesia.

✅ Do not rub the operated eye.
✅ Avoid strenuous exercise and heavy lifting during the first few weeks after surgery.
✅ If you have a job that does not put you under physical strain, you can return to work within two to three weeks after your corneal transplant.
✅ If your job involves physical labor, you should wait three to four months.
✅ Avoid places with smoke and dust that can irritate your eyes.
✅ If your eyes are sensitive to light, sunglasses can help.
✅ Avoid sports that involve your eyes, such as swimming, until your doctor tells you it is safe to do so. Be sure to wear protective eyewear in these situations.
✅ It is okay to bathe and shower normally, but be careful not to get water in your eyes for at least a month.
✅ Do not drive until your specialist gives you the okay.
✅ For all types of corneal transplants, you will need to use steroid or antibiotic eye drops daily for several months. Although some patients may need to use them for more than a year. The drops reduce swelling and inflammation and help prevent infection and rejection of the graft.
✅ After corneal transplant surgery, you will need to see your doctor regularly. These visits can be gradually reduced.
✅ Stitches are used to hold the cornea in place, and these stitches are usually removed after about a year.

The time it takes for your vision to return after a corneal transplant can vary from a few weeks to a year or more. This largely depends on the type of surgery you had.
You will likely need corrective lenses (glasses or contact lenses) after your corneal transplant. In some cases, a small procedure called arcuate keratotomy (AK) or laser therapy can be effective in correcting vision problems after a corneal transplant.
