Definition of disease:
A pterygium is a fleshy, pink tissue that grows on the conjunctiva, or the white part of the eye, in a way that seems to point toward the iris. A pterygium is not a cancerous tissue, however, it can cause fear and concern. The size of the pterygium may increase over time or remain constant at a certain size. In critical and acute cases, the pterygium may grow towards the pupil and cause vision impairment. A pterygium may occur in one or both eyes. In general, a pterygium is not considered a dangerous occurrence, however, it can be uncomfortable. A person may constantly feel like there is a foreign body in the eye or experience discomfort due to inflammation and redness. In addition, it can also be a cosmetic problem.
Wearing sunglasses during the day can be effective, even on cloudy days. It should be noted that clouds cannot prevent the passage of ultraviolet rays from the sun. It is also useful to use a sun hat or scarf to prevent sunlight or dust and wind from entering the eyes. It is also a good idea to wear sunglasses while driving, as ultraviolet rays pass through car windows. In addition, it is recommended to use artificial tear drops in dry weather to prevent dry eyes.
👈 Causes of the disease:
Factors that may contribute to the development of pterygium include:
✅ Excessive exposure to ultraviolet radiation (such as sunlight)
✅ Dry eyes
✅ Foreign object or irritation of the eye by dust or wind
People living near the equator, especially men between the ages of 20 and 40, are at higher risk of developing pterygium. However, not all people living in sunny areas are immune to this risk.
👈 Symptoms of the disease:
✅ Burning sensation in the eyes
✅ Feeling of sand in the eyes
✅ Itching
✅ Redness of the eyes
✅ Can cause blurred or double vision if it reaches the cornea

👈 Surgical method:
If the pterygium is small and does not look unpleasant and does not cause redness or irritation of the eyes, it does not require special treatment. If the pterygium occasionally becomes inflamed and causes irritation and redness of the eyes, repeated use of artificial tear drops may relieve the symptoms. In cases where the pterygium is severely inflamed, a course of treatment with steroid drops or other anti-inflammatory drops can be performed with the advice of an ophthalmologist. In the case of larger pterygium that are important in terms of appearance and beauty or have caused blurred vision by causing astigmatism, the pterygium can be surgically removed. Of course, if the pterygium is removed simply, the likelihood of recurrence is high, and recurrence is seen in half of the cases, especially in young people and people with inflamed pterygium. In these people, it is better to use complementary methods such as conjunctival grafting or the use of special drugs (such as mitomycin) during surgery in addition to removing the pterygium. In very large pterygiums that involve the middle of the cornea, it may be necessary to use a layered corneal transplant to correct the shape of the cornea in addition to the above measures. It should be noted that some eye tumors may initially be mistaken for pterygium. Therefore, in cases where pterygium grows very quickly or recurs frequently, we should definitely consult an ophthalmologist.
