  • 👈 Definition of disease:

The word chalazion is derived from the Greek word for small swelling. It is actually a non-infectious swelling of the eyelid that is the result of a blockage of the ducts of the oil glands of the eyelid. At first, it looks like a stye. A stye is an inflammatory infection of the eyelash that causes a red, swollen lump near the edge of the eyelid and usually heals within a week.

But an eye chalazion is an inflammatory reaction to oil secretions and bacteria do not play a role in its development. Chalazion occurs further away from the eyelid, although its swelling can be felt up to the edge of the eyelid. Also, an eye chalazion is usually just a bump at first and is not accompanied by pain or redness. The risk of developing chalazion is higher in people with thicker meibomian gland secretions than others.

👈 Causes of the disease:

Under the inner surface of the eyelid are small glands called meibomian glands that produce an oily fluid called meibomian oil to help keep the eye moist. If a gland becomes blocked, the meibomian oil cannot enter the tears, so it can swell and form a cyst that leaks into the eyelid tissue, causing inflammation. Over time, the inflammation causes a lump (or granuloma) to form on the eyelid. This hard, firm lump that remains for a long time is called a chalazion. Chalazion is more common in people with blepharitis or a skin condition such as eczema, because in these conditions, the meibomian oil becomes thicker, making the gland more likely to become blocked.

👈 Symptoms of the disease:

✅ The usual symptom is a small lump that develops on the eyelid.
✅ Sometimes it causes mild pain or irritation to the eye, especially if the chalazion is new – and it usually heals.

✅ Rarely, it becomes infected. It then becomes more swollen, red and painful.
✅ It does not affect vision, although sometimes it can grow so large that it presses on the eyeball and reduces vision.

👈 Surgical method:

In this surgery, which is performed in the operating room of Noor Ophthalmology Subspecialty Hospital, the eyelid is first completely numbed using anesthetic drops and ampoules so that the patient does not feel any pain. Then the chalazion is drained through a small incision from the back of the eyelid.
This incision usually does not require stitches and heals on its own. In addition, since the incision is located on the inside of the eyelid, its location is not visible from the eyelid. After draining the chalazion, a bandage is applied to the eye and left on for several hours.
Sometimes, especially in those who suffer from chalazion frequently, the drained secretions are sent to a specialized laboratory for pathology for further examination.

👈 Postoperative care:

✅ After removing the dressing, you may notice thin bloody discharge on the dressing or inside the eye, which is normal and not a cause for concern. This discharge usually resolves within one to two days.
✅ Also, after surgery, bruising and swelling occur at the surgical site, which is also normal. Bruising will usually resolve within 10 days to two weeks.
✅ Your eye doctor may recommend that you use antibiotic or steroid drops, ointments, or creams for a few days. Using these medications will reduce inflammation and help the surgical site heal faster.
✅ If you experience pain at the surgical site, you can use common painkillers such as acetaminophen to control the pain.
