  • 👈 Definition of disease:

Ectropion: A condition in which the eyelid is weak and turns outward

(the back surface of the eyelid is turned outward).

Entropion: The eyelid edge turns inward (towards the eyeball). In this case, the eyelashes rub against the surface of the eyeball (cornea). Entropion is most common in the lower eyelid.

01

👈 Causes of the disease:

Ectropion: The most common cause of ectropion is the loosening of the eyelid tissue and the weakening of the eyelid muscles (orbital muscle) due to aging, but other causes such as congenital cases, paralysis of the seventh facial nerve (facial), eyelid tumors, skin diseases (such as dermatitis), burns and scars (accumulation of scar tissue), and eyelid involvement also occur.
Entropion: Entropion occurs more often in older people and is caused by weakness of the eyelid muscles; but one of its common causes in Iran is trachoma. Trachoma is a common disease in tropical regions and was common in most parts of Iran in the past, especially in Khuzestan Province. This infectious disease affects the surface of the eyeball and causes unevenness and scar tissue on the surface of the eye, resulting in entropion.

👈 Symptoms of the disease:

✅ Inflammation (pain, redness, and swelling) of the eyelid
✅ Tearing
✅ Entropion, if left untreated, can damage and scar the cornea, resulting in decreased vision.
✅ Rolling of the eyelid, which is unsightly.
✅ Dry eyes, caused by tears rolling down the cheek (ectropion) instead of sliding down the eye and moistening it.

👈 Surgical method:

For ectropion surgery, an incision is made on the outside and bottom of the eyelid. A portion of the tissue is removed and the remaining portion is sutured, and the sutures are removed after a few days. This procedure is performed with local anesthesia and without anesthesia.

For entropion surgery, an incision is made in the eyelid and then the muscle that has moved inward is returned to its original position with sutures placed according to the surgeon's calculations. These sutures are removed after a few days. This procedure is performed without anesthesia and with local anesthesia.

👈 Postoperative care:

To relieve inflammation and discomfort, apply warm compresses to your eyelids several times a day. To make a compress, follow these steps: Pour some warm water into a clean container. Soak a clean cloth in the water. Wring it out until it is almost dry. Place the warm, damp cloth over your closed eye for 10 to 15 minutes. Wet and wring the cloth frequently to keep it moist.
If you are exposed to wind or pollutants, wear goggles or goggles-like eye shields to protect your eyes.
