  • 👈 Definition of disease:

In scleral buckling, a ring is placed on the sclera, which brings the sclera, choroid, and retina closer together, which then causes the retinal hole to close, ultimately resulting in partial healing for the patient. The success rate of this procedure is about 60 to 70 percent.

👈 Symptoms of the disease:

✅ Seeing flashes of light in the field of vision
✅ Seeing floating objects in front of the eyes, which may be in the form of flies or dark spots
✅ Seeing objects crookedly
✅ Feeling that there is a shadow in front of the eyes
✅ Sudden decrease in vision

👈 Surgical method:

This method is one of the methods of treating retinal detachment. In this method, a buckle (a soft sponge or silicone strip) is sewn to the sclera (the white of the eye) with stitches and, like a tight belt, presses the outer wall inward and brings it closer to the detached retina so that the retina has a chance to stick in place. If a lot of fluid has accumulated behind the retina, this fluid is drained during surgery so that the retina sticks to the outer wall of the eye more quickly. In addition, during the operation, the edges of the retinal holes are closed using a laser or cryotherapy pen. The scleral buckle remains in place permanently and does not need to be removed (unless it causes a specific problem). The buckle is not visible from the outside and does not cause a noticeable change in the appearance of the eye, but it can cause nearsightedness due to the pressure and deformation of the eyeball.

👈 Postoperative care:

✅ After surgery, especially scleral buckling and vitrectomy, the eye may be painful and sensitive for several days or weeks.
✅ In case of problems, it is usually necessary to use antibiotic drops for one to two weeks and anti-inflammatory drops for several weeks after surgery.
✅ After retinal surgery, it is necessary to regularly visit an ophthalmologist to monitor the condition of the retina and prevent possible complications.
✅ After surgery, avoid sneezing and straining.
✅ Try not to get water in the eyes after surgery. Only cleaning the area around the eyes with cotton wool and cooled boiled water is allowed. Avoid getting shampoo or soap inside the eyes for the first one to two weeks. If possible, use mild shampoos such as baby shampoo.
✅ It is better to refrain from driving until you visit the clinic for a post-operative visit and ask the doctor about this.
